Area Code Updates
On February 4, 2004, the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) issued an Order that adopted an all-services Overlay plan for the 815 area code in northern Illinois. The new 779 area code will serve customers in the same geographic region as the current 815 area code, which includes the Belvidere, Crystal Lake, De Kalb, Dixon, Freeport, Hanover, Joliet, Kankakee, Ottawa, Pontiac, Princeton, Rockford, Sterling and Watseka cities and communities. With the new dialing plan, all calls dialed within the 815 area code will need to be dialed using a 1+10-digit pattern. Key dates are outlined below:
The Permissive Dialing Period for 1+10-digit dialing will begin on August 19, 2006 at 12:01AM. During the Permissive Dialing Period, local calls within the 815 area code may still be dialed using 7 digits but subscribers are encouraged to dial 1+10 digits.
Mandatory Dialing will begin on February 17, 2007. All calls within the 815 area code must be dialed as 1+10-digits. The 815/779 area code Relief Plan will not affect rates or local calling areas. No existing numbers will change; all numbers will retain their current area code.
The effective date for new 779 NPA is March 17, 2007. At this time new telephone lines or services may be assigned using the new NPA, 779. All calls dialed within the new 779 area code will also need to be dialed using a 1+10-digit pattern. Activation of the new 779 area code will not result in any changes in Verizon rates or local calling areas.
