Why can't I receive email in Outlook or Outlook Express after I install MSN® Premium?

When you install MSN Premium, your email account is automatically upgraded to the latest technology.

MSN Premium Mail provides:

  • Access to your email account using the newly installed MSN Premium software or any Web browser by visiting http://www.hotmail.com and entering your MSN Member ID
  • A smart junk mail filter that provides advanced protection against spam
  • Faster performance, because messages are downloaded as soon as you sign in to MSN Premium
  • Offline access that lets you use email when you're not connected

Please note that because MSN Premium comes with features to help protect your email that are not included with previous versions of MSN, MSN Premium does not recommend the use of Outlook or Outlook Express. If this is an inconvenience for you, follow the instructions below to continue to use Outlook XP or Outlook Express.

To continue accessing your MSN email using Outlook XP or Outlook Express, follow these easy steps:

To receive your MSN email in Outlook XP

  1. Click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel (or click Start, then click Control Panel in Windows XP).
  2. Double-click the Mail icon (click Other Control Panel Options if the Mail icon is not visible).
  3. Click Email Accounts.
  4. Select Add a new email account.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select HTTP.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Type the following setting information:
  • In the Your Name box, type your name as you want it to appear to recipients.
  • In the Email Address box, type your email address; for example, myemail@msn.com. Note that the HTTP Mail Service Provider setting automatically switches to MSN from Hotmail when you exit the email address box.
  • In the HTTP Mail Service Provider box, select MSN if this is not already selected.
  • In the User Name box, type your MSN account name.
  • In the Password box, enter your password if you want to save it.
  • Check the Remember password box if you want to have your password saved.
  • DO NOT check Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA).
  1. Click OK.
  2. Click Next.
  3. Click Finish.

To receive your MSN email in Outlook Express 6.0 or later

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171163 and follow the directions provided.

Please note that some features such as Rules and Junk Mail filtering are not currently available on MSN Premium email when using the Outlook or Outlook Express client.

At this time, Outlook 97, 98, and 2000 do not support the retrieval of MSN Premium Mail. If you wish to continue using Outlook 97, 98, or 2000 with your MSN email account, please contact MSN Technical Support at (800) 386-5550 for additional information.
