Verizon Powerful Answers Awards - Sustainability
On February 3, 2015, three great ideas in sustainability were named Verizon Powerful Answers Award winners. After a year-long global challenge to discover and help bring to market technology-based solutions with the potential to change our world, the three winning projects are:
Eco-fuel Africa ($1 Million Winner) - Eco-fuel Africa is committed to fueling an environmentally and financially sustainable Africa. Eco-fuel Africa, based in Kampala, Uganda, has created "green" charcoal produced from agricultural waste that's 65% cheaper than charcoal from wood and burns clearer and longer than wood-based fuels. The fuel reduces the rate of deforestation, creates sustainable local jobs, saves money and reduces indoor air pollution.
d.light ($250,000 Winner) - Created a model for a mobile-enabled distribution grid that provides energy to those in need by designing, manufacturing and distributing solar light and power products throughout the developing world.
Primrose Creek Watershed Association - "We All Live Downstream"
The Verizon Foundation has given a $5,000 grant to the Primrose Creek Watershed Association, (PCWA) in Solebury, Pennsylvania, to assist community school children to have a better understanding of the quotation “We all Live Downstream.” High school students from New Hope–Solebury, (PA) School as well the Philadelphia suburb school district of Bristol; will be participating in these classes.
