During April’s National Stress Awareness Month, Health Resource Network (HRN) is encouraging people to learn more about stress, including its dangers and successful coping strategies.

According to the Stress in America survey, conducted by the American Psychological Association, 35 percent of adults feel more stress this year than last year. Of the participants surveyed, more than half say they received little to no support for their stress problems.

The APA suggests Americans practice healthy habits such as meditation and taking technology breaks to reduce stress, and Verizon Wireless recommends several apps that can help:

Tactical Breather (Free on iPhone, Android) can be used gain control over stress and negative physiological responses to stress. The app features tactical breathing training to help users control their heart rate, emotions, concentration and other natural stress responses.

Breathe 2 Relax (Free on iPhone, Android) includes instructions and practice exercises to help users learn stress management through diaphragmatic breathing. Breathing exercises, such as those provided on Breathe2Relax, have proven to help individuals decrease stress and help with mood stabilization, anger control and anxiety management.

We all need our sleep. One of the best ways to avoid stress is to get a good night’s sleep, and this means taking a complete break from technologywhen “catching those zs.” The No Disturb (Free on Android) app, similar to the “Do Not Disturb” service built into iOs 6 phones, allows users to mute all incoming notification, calls, texts and other intrusions. This app helps users get a good night’s rest and allows time for de-stressing when you need that down time.

Technology can be a valuable tool in helping us, but can also increase the amount of stress in our lives. With these apps to relieve anxiety, take a deep breath, think relaxing thoughts and use the technology of your wireless device to help reduce your stress.
