It‘s a love hate relationship for those of us that depend on various modes of transportation. Delays are often  minor and we factor them into our routine, but a power failure like the one affecting rail traffic from Boston to New York, leaving over 13,000 commuters offers a good reminder that we should always be ready to work from home, or from anywhere. So what are some options when faced with a travel delay?

Work From Home?

Be sure to know your internet connection speed. Sometimes our office connection is much faster and this can become a problem when trying to send a large file from the comfort of your couch or home office. If you don’t know your internet speed, this speed test can help you find out how fast you’re running. Speaking of the couch, sometimes working from home isn’t that simple. Our BHR3 router not only enhances wifi connectivity throughout the house but, provides a reliable connection no matter what tasks come up!

Internet on the Go

We’re all expected to be connected in today’s world. Commuter delays are rarely an excuse with the tablets and mobile devices people have with them. While more trains and buses are installing Wi-Fi enabled equipment, many still  don’t. One of the best ways to stay connected is with a mobile hotspot such as MiFi or Jetpack.

Go Hands Free

Sometimes at the last second, instead of trying to find an alternative mode of transportation, it’s just easier to hop in the car and drive where you need to be. Products such as BlueAnt provide voice activated hands free options for those on the go. Also, having a Bluetooth device set up on your smartphone prior to driving your vehicle is also essential and an easy option.

Commuting Apps

In an article by mashable, a recent study found that commuters who use connected apps tend to have a better time getting from point A to point B. It’s always good to not only download apps that provide traffic updates, local gas stations, and alternate routes but, apps that are local to your area. For example, if you are a commuter in Massachusetts, it may be helpful to have apps that provide commuter train times such as Embark BOS, the Amtrak mobile app, MBTA app, and even car or taxi service phone numbers saved to your contact list.
