The digitization of healthcare – from electronic health records (EHR) to data analytics – is changing how care is delivered. This is the takeaway from Verizon Enterprise Solutions’ inaugural report, “Digital transformation powers your business — healthcare,” that explores how digital-enabling technologies such as mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud and video are the key technology drivers behind this transformation in the healthcare industry.
Leading the shift in the delivery of patient care is the increased use of mobile and IoT technologies. For example, connected medical devices give patients the ability to manage chronic conditions from their own homes, and enable clinicians to monitor vitals and treatment compliance remotely. In fact, sixty-eight percent of healthcare leaders say they have implemented or plan to implement IoT solutions, with the goal of improving process effectiveness and driving growth revenue. Self-service options and remote consultations via video and the web also are opening up real-time access to care and helping to control costs.
The report also points out how leveraging big data solutions is enabling healthcare providers to reinvent the care model. A whopping 88 percent of healthcare companies say they already use, or plan to use, big data solutions to support decision-making. For example, providers are using new clinical apps, linked to shared data stores and rich analytical tools, to give doctors and other caregivers up to the minute insights to make better decisions at the point of care. Furthermore, automation, the intersection of IoT and big data analytics will help managers better evaluate care outcomes and focus on what treatments work best. “These types of bandwidth intensive applications require a secure and reliable network,” said Nancy Green, global healthcare lead, Verizon Enterprise Solutions. “In today’s digital age, having healthcare-enabled solutions is a key requirement healthcare organizations need to drive the digital transformation of their enterprise.”
