JACKSON, Miss. (July 24, 1995)-- LDDS WorldCom has filed application to offer local telecommunications services on a resale basis to customers in Illinois and Michigan. The application, made July 14 with public utility commissions in Illinois and Michigan, is based on orders issued earlier this spring that cleared the way for development of effective competitive local exchange services on a trial basis in Chicago and in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The U.S. Department of Justice has endorsed the trial proposed by Ameritech, a regional Bell company that provides local service in the two states. The trial is awaiting federal court approval. "We hope to receive an expedited review of our applications to resell the limited local service offering available in these markets," said Don Bolar, senior vice president of marketing for LDDS WorldCom. "This trial offers us valuable experience in reselling unbundled local services to our customers. "Telecommunications users must have real choices among local providers, as they do among long distance carriers, in order to unsnarl the on-ramps to the information superhighway. We want to assure our customers that LDDS WorldCom will play a key role in defining these markets."

Bolar said LDDS WorldCom, as one of the largest long distance providers in the United States, has a history of offering a fully integrated service package to customers. "We are unmatched in our ability to integrate data and switched service products that are both innovative and economical. We have a state-of-the-art national fiber-optic network, complimented by ubiquitous international coverage," Bolar said. "Reselling local services is a natural extension of our focus on providing customers with advanced, effective and affordable solutions. "We are committed to providing our customers with a comprehensive package of telecommunications products -- including local services. We will be looking to regulators to help create a viable competitive environment for providing these services to our customers."

LDDS WorldCom, one of the four largest U.S.-based long-distance carriers, is a full-service telecommunications company that operates a nationwide digital fiber-optic network and has worldwide network capacity. It offers domestic and international data, voice and video products and services to other carriers, business customers and the residential market. The shares of WorldCom, Inc. trade on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the symbol WCOM.
