Verizon Wireless is currently upgrading its network's base stations and switches with CDMA2000 1X circuit cards and software and plans to begin phasing in commercial 3G services to its customers later this year. 3G 1X will provide wireless data access rates up to 144 kilobits per second.

The LG InfoComm tri-mode phone, to be introduced as VZW520 is being tested on the carrier's CDMA2000 1X field test system in Maple Shade, NJ and in the Verizon Wireless handset laboratory. The VZW520 is capable of operating on 800 MHz and 1.9 GHz bands on Verizon Wireless' CDMA network, and is designed to provide seamless access to Verizon Wireless' premier, coast-to-coast network.

"LG InfoComm and Verizon Wireless have forged a strong relationship built around our handsets that combine innovative features with desirable form factors," said Steve Klar, director of sales for LG InfoComm USA, Inc. "We are pleased Verizon Wireless has selected the LG-TM520 for testing on its 3G network. Whether it's used for data or voice, the successfully tested LG-TM520 will bring Verizon Wireless customers a new level of functionality in an affordable, ultra-compact phone."

The handset measures 3.2 x 1.8 x 0.9 inches and weighs 3.8 ounces, and provides 200 minutes of talk time and 350 hours of standby while in digital mode using the standard battery. It is Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) enabled and has full personal information management (PIM) functionality, providing both an address book and scheduler with PC synchronization capability.

For interface, the VZW520 has a four-way navigation key and utilizes the Tegic T9TM text input system and the UP 4.1 WAP browser. The phone's interior display is a high-resolution LCD capable of displaying five lines of data plus one line of icons.

Additional features of the handset include Sound Caller ID, four level vibration alert, voice mail and text notification, voice-activated dialing, voice recording, voice privacy, a 199-record phone book with 5 entries per record, 2-way SMS, dual language with T9TM and support for MSM 5105 and OTASP/PA (IS-683A).
