Arcade Rejects Local Calling to Buffalo

ARCADE, N.Y. - Verizon telephone customers in the Wyoming County town of Arcade have voted against a plan to expand their local-calling area to include the City of Buffalo, as well as a number of other Erie County communities.

In a Verizon-sponsored survey of Arcade customers conducted recently, about 54 percent rejected a proposal to expand their local-calling area. The proposal would have eliminated regional toll charges for calls between Arcade and Buffalo and enabled Arcade residents to make local calls to nearly 370,000 additional customers in western New York. The proposal also would have increased the charge for flat-rate residential telephone service by $8.20 a month to reflect the increased value of the larger local-calling area.

The survey was requested last year by a group of Arcade residents and businesses.

In addition to the city of Buffalo, the expanded local calling area would have eliminated toll charges for calls between Arcade and the Erie County communities of East Aurora, Holland, Orchard Park and West Seneca. The plan also would have eliminated toll charges on calls from Arcade to the Wyoming County community of Varysburg.

As a result of the vote, there will be no changes in rates or calling areas for Arcade residents. The Arcade local calling area includes about 9,800 telephones customers in the communities of Bliss, Chaffee, Java and Machias, as well as Arcade.
