Bell Atlantic To Create 200 Jobs At New Regional Customer Service Center in Ewing Township

New Jersey Employees to Handle First Contact

With New Customers in Mid-Atlantic Region

NEWARK, N.J. - Bell Atlantic-New Jersey will create 200 new jobs by

opening a customer service facility in Ewing Township, the company

announced today.

Employees at the Bell Atlantic Welcome Center, which will be located

at 777 Parkway Ave., will verify credit information and addresses of

customers from the mid-Atlantic states who are ordering home telephone

service from Bell Atlantic for the first time.

The center is scheduled to open during the third quarter of 1998.

Bell Atlantic-New Jersey President and CEO Len J. Lauer said that the

Welcome Center and its 200 new jobs were lured to the Greater Trenton

area by attentive state and county governments.

"As a matter of geography, the Welcome Center could have been located

anywhere on the Eastern Seaboard," Lauer said. "But it ended up in

Ewing Township because the New Jersey Department of Commerce offers

outstanding job training incentives, and Mercer County has a strong

record of encouraging workforce investment."

Bell Atlantic has added nearly 1,300 jobs to its New Jersey workforce

since the beginning of 1996. The Welcome Center will increase that

total to nearly 1,500 new jobs.

"Mercer County is glad to be the home of Bell Atlantic's Welcome

Center," said Mercer County Executive Bob Prunetti. "As many people

already know, Mercer County has an educated workforce, a safe and

efficient infrastructure and a unique quality of life that balances

economic development with the preservation of open space. Now, we can

add the Bell Atlantic Welcome Center to our list of assets."

The Welcome Center will make it easier for new customers to sign up

for Bell Atlantic services by making new order processing more


Today, credit screening is handled by Bell Atlantic consultants in the

company's residential sales and service centers. When Welcome Center

employees take on credit screening responsibilities, service

consultants will be able to focus completely on helping new customers

select telecommunications services.

"The new Bell Atlantic has set ambitious goals for the quality of

service we provide our customers," said Larry Grant, vice president of

receivables management for Bell Atlantic. "This center is a prime

example of how Bell Atlantic is striving to improve customer service

in every aspect of its business."

The Welcome Center will use the latest technology and Bell

Atlantic-New Jersey's advanced telecommunications infrastructure to

handle an estimated 775,000 calls a year from new customers.

Most jobs at the new center will be full-time positions starting at

about $16,000 a year and increasing to $33,000 after three years. The

jobs also will include an excellent benefits package - with medical,

dental, vision, 401[k] and pension plans.
