BOSTON - Bell Atlantic is sending a vast Valentine of financial
support addressed to hundreds of charitable organizations throughout
the Bay State.

The Bell Atlantic Foundation will donate $2.4 million to organizations
across the Commonwealth during 1998, according to Wayne Budd, Bell
Atlantic group president - New England.

"Expressions of caring are much in evidence right now, but our
Valentine to worthy causes is designed to convey compassion and
much-needed support throughout the year," said Budd.

Bell Atlantic will be making contributions to a wide variety of
charities, with special emphasis devoted to those that are seeking to
equip the Bay State's young people with the technical skills they will
need to survive and prosper in the 21st century.

Maureen Murray, director of the Metro South School-to-Career
Partnership in Brockton, said a substantial Bell Atlantic grant in
1997 helped her organization "launch exciting new vocational
initiatives and attract an additional $200,000 in grants from other
sources." She said that through Bell Atlantic's state-wide EdLink
program her partnership was "able to connect with many similar
organizations and benefit from the experience of a wide circle of
students and teachers representing much of Massachusetts."

Budd said that the thrust of Bell Atlantic's philanthropy program is
evolving: "While we are continuing to support traditional charities
such as food banks and shelters for victims of domestic violence, we
are paying particular attention to organizations engaged in the vital
process of preparing today's students for purposeful careers and
satisfying lives -- thus reducing the burden on the food banks and
shelters of tomorrow."

Bell Atlantic - formed through the merger of Bell Atlantic and NYNEX -
is at the forefront of the new communications, information and
entertainment industry. With 40.5 million telephone access lines and
six million wireless customers worldwide, Bell Atlantic companies are
premier providers of advanced wireline voice and data services, market
leaders in wireless services and the world's largest publishers of
directory information. Bell Atlantic companies are also among the
world's largest investors in high-growth global communications markets,
with operations and investments in 21 countries.
