NEW YORK -- The YWCA of the City of New York has named Maura
C. Breen, president and chief executive officer of Bell Atlantic
Communications Inc., to the Academy of Women Achievers (AWA).

Breen leads the Bell Atlantic subsidiary that will market long-distance
service to 22 million homes in New York and throughout Bell Atlantic's
Maine to Virginia service area, once federal and state regulators allow the
company to do so.

Founded by the YWCA in 1974, the AWA recognizes the achievements
and contributions of professional women. It is committed to the
education, advancement and acknowledgment of women in the workplace
and has more than 2,000 members.

"Membership is a significant honor that recognizes outstanding
accomplishment and places the honoree in the ranks of America's most
important female executives," said Sally T. Butler, president of the
New York YWCA.

Throughout her Bell Atlantic career, Breen has successfully led efforts to
market communications services in the most competitive markets in the
industry. She has previously served as the company's vice president of
operations, consumer sales and service and as vice president of consumer
sales and service for New York and New England.

Last month, the chairman of the New York State Public Service
Commission told the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that
Bell Atlantic had met all of the requirements of the Telecommunications
Act for providing long-distance service in New York and said that the
FCC should approve the company's application.

Bell Atlantic is at the forefront of the new communications and
information industry. With more than 43 million telephone access lines
and more than 10 million wireless customers worldwide, Bell Atlantic
companies are premier providers of advanced wireline voice and data
services, market leaders in wireless services and the world's largest
publishers of directory information. Bell Atlantic companies are also
among the world's largest investors in high-growth global communications
markets, with operations and investments in 23 countries.
