Bell Atlantic Network Integration Wins ETS Contract for ATM

January 30, 1996

Frazer, PA -- Educational Testing Service (ETS) of Princeton,
has selected Bell Atlantic Network Integration (BANI) to design,
deploy and remotely manage an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)
backbone network connecting ETS's Princeton-area campuses providing
support for voice, data and eventually video traffic.

Based on the IBM NWays ATM switch, the network will allow a mix of
traffic which includes traditional LAN (local area network), SNA
(systems network architecture), voice and video.

The $1 million contract is a landmark agreement because it is the
first enterprise ATM backbone network in which management services are
"out-tasked" to a network integrator, and one in which the
integrator is managing both voice and data traffic.

"By pairing BANI's interoperability lab and Enterprise Network
Management Service with IBM's ATM switch, we've chosen a solution to
support our communications requirements well into the future," said
Richard Formichella, vice president of information and systems
technology for ETS. "Those requirements include meeting the demand
for better learning and assessment activities for America's education
system. Telecommunications technology will play a strategic role in
helping us meet that demand more effectively and efficiently."

The ATM network will replace an aging multiplexor-based network which
provided connectivity for voice and the wide-area connections for
Cisco routers and SNA controllers. Taking advantage of the benefits
of ATM, available bandwidth will increase at least tenfold and the
network will be managed more intelligently. It also provides a
platform which will support the creation of virtual work groups,
simplifying the ongoing network administration.

Before installation at ETS, BANI will fully stage the ATM network at
its interoperability lab to facilitate trouble-free deployment. After
installation in April, BANI will remotely manage the network from its
Network Operations Center near Philadelphia. The network will be
monitored and managed around-the-clock, seven days per week, using
IBM's Netview/6000 network management platform.

"We believe BANI has raised the bar by which all network integrators
will be measured in the future," said Art Dolimpio, ATM program
manager for Bell Atlantic Network Integration. "Remote management,
voice traffic capability and extensive ATM expertise will be the keys
to the future success of network integrators."

ETS is the world's largest private educational measurement institution
and a leader in educational research. It develops and administers
achievement, occupational and admission tests such as the SAT for the
College Board and for other clients in education, government and
business. ETS has six regional offices and administers more than nine
million exams in the United States and 180 other countries.

Bell Atlantic Network Integration, an unregulated subsidiary
affiliated with Bell Atlantic's Large Business Services division,
offers services covering the full network life-cycle -- planning,
deployment and management. This includes consulting, full and
functional outsourcing and ongoing support of enterprise networks. In
1994, BANI was ranked among the top 10 network integrators and in a
1995 company profile, Dataquest characterized BANI as an industry
player to watch. BANI is also one of the few network integrators that
actively participates in the ATM Forum.
