eXitSource Teams with Verizon Wireless to Deliver "Information in Motion" to Motorists
Relevant Information on Interstate Travel Services Accessible Instantly in a Safe, Mobile-Centric Format For Millions of Wireless Customers
July 17, 2000
ATLANTA - eXitSource (formerly Interstate America), the definitive source of real-time travel content for motorists en route, today announced a partnership agreement with Verizon Wireless, the company formed by the combination GTE's, Bell Atlantic's and Vodafone AirTouch's U.S. cellular, paging and PCS businesses. A new wireless Web application from eXitSource will be one of the preferred services available free-of-charge for Verizon Wireless' Mobile Web customers. As a result of the signed agreement, eXitSource's new wireless data product will soon be available to Verizon's customer base of nearly 25 million wireless and voice data customers.
eXitSource's wireless Web content connects interstate highway travelers to eXitSource's in-depth, relevant data on travel services at every exit in the United States and Canada, providing essential road travel information, such as gas, food and lodging en route, precisely when drivers need it. Designed with ease-of-use and motorist safety in mind, eXitSource is an invaluable resource for emergency needs, as well as for enhancing the safety, convenience and enjoyment of highway travelling. Unlike map-based services that require street addresses and zip codes, eXitSource has a data presentation format designed to be user friendly for drivers. Motorists access the database using a simple scroll-and-click text menu to enter the interstate and exit numbers.
"eXitSource will transform the mobile consumer's driving experience and set the standard for providing real-time essential travel information en route, in a format that is safer to access and easier to use than any service of its kind," said Ron Peterson, CEO of eXitSource. "We're proud to team with Verizon Wireless, a visionary telecommunications provider, which recognizes the functionality and road-knowledge our products will deliver to their users."
Verizon Wireless today launched its nationwide Mobile Web service, which combines the convenience and mobility of wireless communications with popular content from the World Wide Web. The Mobile Web service, which runs on Verizon Wireless' robust and reliable, coast-to-coast CDMA network, gives users access to the Web-based information they want via their wireless handset. Under the terms of the agreement, eXitSource will be one of the top selections under the travel category on Mobile Web handsets. Both companies will be responsible for market education, including advertising and marketing.
"This agreement represents our commitment to introduce a complete range of customized information services for our Mobile Web customers. eXitSource adds real value to the service, driving users to rely on their mobile phone as an indispensable source of information that follows them anywhere," said Mark Lefar, Verizon Wireless' staff vice president, e-Business, Wireless Internet and Data Services. "Mobile Web users have the ability to completely customize their wireless Internet experience based on their personal interests and needs, so if accessing road travel information while en route is critical to a user, they can easily configure their service to quickly access and receive that type of data via their wireless handset."
Relationship signifies new business focus for eXitSource
The Verizon relationship marks eXitSource's transition into the wireless data market. For years, eXitSource print guides have been preferred and relied upon by commercial drivers - such as professional truck drivers and tour bus operators and drivers - as well as by RV owners/drivers. By supplying uncommon value to their respective memberships, eXitSource has won endorsements from the American Trucking Associations (ATA), National Association of Truck Stop Owners (NATSO), the American Bus Association (ABA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
In addition, eXitSource data resides "under the hood" of several major location-based service providers and in-vehicle navigational system marketers. The company has licensed data, digital mapping and Internet locator services to Rand-McNally, AAA, Microsoft, ETAK, Magellan, Honda Corporation of America, General Motors On-Star, Hertz Neverlost, among others.
"eXitSource is poised for rapid growth, combining roadway information that consumers need precisely at the time they need it, with our already strong roster of strategic partners," said Peterson. "Our unrivaled database of information provides an ideal launching pad to expand into m-commerce partnerships, which will include business-to-business transactions and advertising."
Opening its doors for business in 1994, eXitSource (formerly Interstate America) is the definitive source of real-time travel content for motorists en route. Using its comprehensive, proprietary database of businesses ahead on every interstate highway exit in the United States and Canada, eXitSource delivers authoritative data products across wireless, Internet and print media that help leisure motorists and professional drivers locate businesses and resources along interstate highways exactly at the time of need. Motor Trend magazine has called eXitSource's Exit Authority guide "The Bible of Interstate Travel." For more information, call (800) 683-3948.
