Hispanic Federation of New York City Receives $500,000 from NYNEX for Technology Integration Initiative

NEW YORK----The Hispanic Federation of New York City today announced
the award of a $500,000 grant from NYNEX. The grant was announced by Don
Reed, president of NYNEX, at the Hispanic Federation's Third Annual Gala
last evening (3/6) at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan.

The grant enables the establishment of the Federation's Technology
Integration Initiative, which will strengthen the technological infrastructure
of its member agency network, comprised of 60 community-based organizations
serving New York's Hispanic community.

The three-year grant includes $300,000 in cash and donations of
equipment, materials and training services worth $200,000.

"We are thrilled," said Luis A. Miranda, Jr., president
of the Hispanic Federation. "Through the exemplary generosity and
continued dedication of NYNEX to the Hispanic community, we will equip
our member agencies with the necessary communications tools to operate
efficiently in the information age and allow them to improve the delivery
of services to our community."

"NYNEX is proud to extend this support to the Hispanic Federation,
its member agencies and the New York Hispanic community," said Reed.
"The new technological capabilities provided by this grant gives the
Latino community in New York a good technological foothold and a green
light on the Information Superhighway.

"The 'Information Age' is advancing rapidly and threatens to
leave behind anyone who does not have access to technology. The NYNEX grant
secures that access for an important part of the Latino community,"
Reed added.

NYNEX was also presented with the "Corporate Leadership"
award at the Federation's gala event for its consistent support of the
Hispanic community. NYNEX supports a variety of different Hispanic organizations
and programs from throughout the region and provides additional funding
for scholarships to students from diverse ethnic communities.

The $500,000 commitment to the Hispanic Federation represents the
largest award by NYNEX to a single Hispanic organization. Specifically,
the grant will provide member agencies of the Hispanic Federation with:

- Hardware;

- Internet access and e-mail, as well as design and upkeep;

- Access to video-conferencing facilities;

- Training and technical assistance through the establishment of
a Department of Information Technology at the Hispanic Federation and a
customized "technical institute" for its members;

- Enhanced communication capabilities for agencies working in the
areas of education and community economic development with the creation
of Community Resource for Economic Development and Information Technology
(CREDIT), a "virtual" information center supported by a dedicated
server; and,

- Creation of a PSA fund-raising campaign.

In addition to the operational benefits made possible by the technology
provided by NYNEX, agencies will be able to discuss issues, conduct interactive
forums, deal with fund-raising and take part in advocacy and grassroots
mobilizing efforts. It will also empower agencies to improve the delivery
of services to their clients.

For instance, in the area of job training, re-training and employment
development, clients of such agencies as the Dominican Women's Development
Center and the National Puerto Rican Forum, will be able to conduct job
searches on-line. Other agencies will utilize the new technology to offer
computer training and adult education courses for members of the Hispanic
community. Referrals between agencies will also be facilitated.

The Hispanic Federation of New York City, founded in 1990, is a
membership organization of 60 Latino health and human services agencies
serving more than two million Hispanic New Yorkers annually. The Federation's
mission is to build and strengthen the Latino non-profit organizational
network to meet the challenges of the next century. In order to realize
