ICSA Labs, an independent division of Verizon Business, announced Thursday (Oct. 22) that it has certified five vendors in detection and cleaning following its first round of testing security software designed for the just-released Microsoft Windows 7 operating system.

ICSA Labs found that products from ESET, Microsoft, Norman, PC Tools and Webroot comply with its requirements for how well a product detects malicious code, such as viruses, bots and worms.

To achieve the ICSA Labs Anti-Virus Certification, products must meet all criteria for detection of malware in desktops and servers.  Products must demonstrate they have the capability to detect, identify and prevent self-replicating malware while reporting no false positives.  The products also must be able to log the results of virus-detection attempts.

The following products earned ICSA Labs Certification for detection:

  • ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 on Windows 7 64-bit
  • Microsoft Forefront Client Security on Windows 7 64-bit
  • Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit
  • Norman Security Suite on Windows 32-bit
  • PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus on Windows 7 32-bit
  • Webroot AntiVirus with SpySweeper on Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit
  • Webroot Internet Security Essentials on Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit

The anti-virus cleaning requirements include removal of "in-the-wild" viruses from infected files and sectors.  The products must be able to remove all viruses without adversely affecting the data or functionality that existed before the infection.

The following products earned ICSA Labs Anti-Virus Certification for cleaning:

  • ESET Nod32 Antivirus on Windows 7 64-bit
  • Microsoft Forefront Client Security on Windows 7 64-bit
  • Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit
  • Webroot Internet Security Essentials on Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit
  • Webroot AntiVirus with SpySweeper on Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit

"The continuing onslaught of malicious code means it remains critically important that end-users have help maintaining the security of their operating systems, even on the newest ones," said Andrew Hayter, anti-malcode program manager,  ICSA Labs.  "ICSA Labs works closely with product vendors and corporate users to develop thorough, up-to-date testing standards for anti-virus products.  We provide continuing assurance on security products, with the overriding goal of helping end-users make informed buying decisions for their organizations."
