Joint Statement of Bell Atlantic &
NYNEX on Department of Justice Approval Of SBC-Pactel Merger

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 6 -- The following was issued by Bell Atlantic
(NYSE: BEL) and NYNEX (NYSE: NYN)

We're encouraged that the Department of Justice has approved the
merger of SBC and Pacific Telesis, and we see no reason why they won't do
the same for Bell Atlantic and NYNEX.

Our merger will benefit our customers with increased competition
and improved service, and provide our shareowners with long-term growth
potential. We expect the Department will complete a thorough investigation
and conclude there are no antitrust issues.
