Hometown football comes to North Jersey Friday (Sept. 11) when Verizon FiOS1 and the Star-Ledger begin co-producing high school football games of the week.  The first game, Mendham versus West Morris, will be broadcast live 7:30 p.m. on FiOS1 New Jersey.  These games won't be seen on cable TV.

"We're thrilled to kick off the fall sports season with what promises to be an exciting year for local sports in New Jersey," said Dennis Bone, president of Verizon New Jersey.  "FiOS1 New Jersey will offer viewers a new opportunity to see a variety of high school and collegiate sports including football, soccer and so much more."

George Arwady, publisher of the Star-Ledger, said: "Partnering with Verizon FiOS1 television and adding the game of the week to our online high school sports video package at NJ.com is a terrific win for New Jersey high school sports fans and athletes.  Fans can watch the games on FiOS TV or stream them on NJ.com from any Web-enabled computer. There will be more full-game video available now than ever before, on TV and online."

FiOS1 New Jersey launched in June, bringing viewers new options for hyper-local content including news, sports, traffic and weather, and other exciting programming. The channel is only available on the Verizon FiOS TV network.

In addition to Friday's Mendham-West Morris game, other key games to be co-produced by FiOS1 and the Star Ledger/NJ.com include the "Turkey Day Classic" between Montclair and Bloomfield high schools, which will be broadcast live on Thanksgiving Day at 10:30 a.m., and four New Jersey state high school football games, which will be broadcast on Dec. 3 and 4. Also, FiOS1 will air four more state championship games live from Giants Stadium on Dec. 6.  There will be tape-delayed broadcasts of other games.

In addition to carrying high school football and other sports, FiOS1 New Jersey, FiOS1 Long Island and FiOS1 in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area will air select collegiate athletic events featuring teams from Rutgers, Princeton, Hofstra, Georgetown and George Mason.
