Note to Editors:

The following statement is in response to today's Wall St. Journal
story about Bell Atlantic's investment in Iusacell:

Bell Atlantic continues to believe in the long term value
of our
investment in Grupo Iusacell, given the enormous potential for wired
and wireless telecommunications services in Mexico. Pulling out of
the investment is not something we are considering.

Grupo Iusacell is on track toward its goal of becoming a full service
network alternative to the local telephone monopoly. The leading
Mexican independent wireless telecommunications company, Iusacell
holds a national cellular license covering 70 per cent of the
country's population and currently serves more than 200,000 customers.

It also holds a license for long distance service, which should be
operational by year-end. It has filed for permission to enter the
local wireline telephony business, and has a national paging
franchise.

Iusacell intends, however, to fight aggressively for approval of the
technical and economic plans for 450MHZ fixed wireless service, which
we believe Grupo Iusacell is legally entitled to.
