NYNEX Helps Realize College Dreams for 144 New York Students

NYNEX Scholarship Program Totals $1.4 million

NEW YORK, NY -- The NYNEX Foundation will award $315,000 in college scholarships
to 144 New York high school students at a special ceremony on Wednesday, May 14,
at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

The second annual NYNEX Diversity Scholarship Awards -- part of a $1.4 million
overall scholarship program -- are aimed at providing opportunities to students from
diverse cultural, ethnic, socio-economic, educational and special needs backgrounds.
Recipients of the scholarships were selected based on their academic achievements,
community activities and leadership skills. They will receive individual scholarships
ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

"NYNEX is committed to preparing the work force of the future to help
our nation succeed in a highly competitive global economy," said Donald Reed,
President and Group Executive, NYNEX External Affairs and Corporate Communications.
"We are proud to play a part in encouraging our youth to pursue their dreams
through education and positioning them for successful careers."

Students from Buffalo to Brooklyn are represented in the group of scholarship
winners. As part of the company's recognition of the students' accomplishments, they
will be featured in the NYNEX Hall of Fame on the NYNEX Foundation website the night
of the awards ceremony. Digitized photos of the recipients will be accessible via
the website located at www.nynexfoundation.com. (A complete list of winners from
throughout the state is attached.)

The goal of the NYNEX Diversity Scholarship program is to provide opportunities
to students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socio-economic, educational and special
needs backgrounds to attend college or an accredited technical institute of their
choice. Over 250 individual awards are granted throughout the NYNEX territory by
the NYNEX Foundation. These include corporate contributions to the United Negro College
Fund, the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, National Hispanic
Scholarship Fund, Independent College Fund of New York, American Indian College Fund
and the Citizen's Scholarship Foundation of America's Dollars for Scholars program.

The NYNEX Foundation administers all domestic and international philanthropic
grants on behalf of NYNEX. The Foundation's philanthropic emphasis is on providing
safe havens for youth and grants to education, arts and human services.

NYNEX and Bell Atlantic recently announced a new $50 million initiative as
part of the President's Summit for America's Future. The two companies will support
multi-faceted after-school programs that provide "safe havens" for children,
during their most vulnerable after-school hours, in thirteen North Atlantic states.
