NEW YORK - Residents of 18 apartment buildings operated by the Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers (MHACY) will soon be able to connect to Verizon's advanced all-fiber-optic network - and enjoy FiOS TV and FiOS Internet services.

The company and the MHACY have reached an agreement to bring FiOS services to all 2,029 apartments in the public housing buildings. Verizon has already begun the buildout of its all-fiber-optic network there, and has an aggressive plan to complete installation and to begin to offer some residents of the buildings FiOS services later this month. The services will be available to all residents by year-end.

"We're delighted MHACY is bringing to its residents the nation's most advanced all-fiber-optic network," said Eric Cevis, vice president of Verizon Enhanced Communities, Verizon's business organization that markets and sells communications services to single- and multiple-home properties and small commercial properties. "Residents will enjoy the fastest Internet connections and a broad range of programming choices and superior picture quality when FiOS services become available."

The MHACY, the second-largest public housing authority in the New York area, provides affordable housing to eligible low-income families and individuals, and helps them become self-sufficient and economically independent.

As a part of the housing authority's community outreach, it opened a computer center where residents can access the Internet or take free classes to become more computer literate.

Joseph Shuldiner, the Yonkers housing authority's executive director, said, "We're excited to upgrade our properties with the very latest communications and entertainment infrastructure from Verizon. We want our residents to have the latest technology that is available today - fiber optics straight to their home."

Residents will be able to subscribe to Verizon's FiOS Internet and FiOS TV services.  FiOS TV offers a broad collection of all-digital programming, with more than 500 total channels, including 100 high-definition channels in the New York City metro market.  FiOS TV also delivers 11,000 video-on-demand (VOD) titles per month, 70 percent of which are free. The VOD library also includes an increasing number of HD titles, and Verizon plans to offer 1,000 HD VOD titles each month by year-end.

Verizon FiOS Internet service can deliver Internet access with maximum downstream connection speeds of up to 50 Mbps (megabits per second) on the nation's most advanced digital, all-fiber-optic network. At 50 Mbps, downloading a 1.2 GB (gigabyte), or 90-minute, standard-definition movie takes approximately 3.2 minutes. Upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps make it a snap to share purchased videos and files over Verizon's large-scale fiber-optic network, which extends all the way to customers' homes or small and medium-sized businesses.

Verizon's FiOS Internet service was named the top pick in PC Magazine's 2008 readers' survey and also was named a winner in PC World Magazine's The 100 Best Products of 2008.  It was the second year in a row that the broadband service made both lists.

Verizon is the only major telecom company whose network has earned the certification of the independent Fiber to the Home Council for providing fiber all the way to customers' homes.

Since the end of 2005, Verizon Enhanced Communities has aggressively pursued agreements with property owners to bring FiOS to their properties. To date, Verizon Enhanced Communities has entered agreements with developers and contractors for new developments under construction covering 400,000 private households, and is offering FiOS to 815,000 apartment units across 16 states where the company is currently building its all-fiber network.

Verizon Enhanced Communities received the Cornerstone Award from Broadband Properties Magazine acknowledging the organization for outfitting a 300-unit, eight-building residential community in Dedham, Mass., with Verizon's FiOS services in just 14 days.  For more information about the products and services available through Verizon Enhanced Communities, visit www.verizon.com/communities.
