RICHMOND, Va. -- In the post-Sept. 11 world, employers across the country are looking at their daily operations and asking themselves, "How would my organization continue to operate in a disaster?"

Richmond-area businesses and government agencies will get some help answering that question today at a seminar presented by Verizon. Using its own experience as a guide, Verizon will emphasize the importance of back-up communications and discuss the products that helped the company manage through the catastrophic events of last fall. These products and services, many of which are widely deployed and used for everyday communication, can help employers keep employees connected and sustain critical links to customers and suppliers.

"The events of Sept. 11 profoundly altered the environment in which businesses and governments operate," said Dennis Elwell, executive director, business recovery and continuity services, Verizon Enterprise Solutions Group. "Managers now know that they must be prepared for an event that could disrupt their normal operations. This is as true here in Richmond as it is in New York City or Washington, D.C.

"Many businesses and government agencies with sound contingency plans in place before Sept. 11 have reevaluated those plans to make them stronger, more reliable and more comprehensive. Customers are seeking truly redundant systems that they can count on to maintain normal communications during extraordinary circumstances," he said.

Verizon learned first-hand the value and importance of services normally taken for granted after the terrorist attacks in Manhattan severely damaged a major call-switching center and office next to the World Trade Center complex. Communications services from Verizon such as custom redirect, secure managed e-mail and remote access were critical in reconnecting hundreds of displaced employees and allowing them to work from alternate sites. Incoming calls were forwarded without having to assign new phone numbers, e-mail access was quickly restored and employees were able to connect to Verizon's corporate network and access critical business information from their homes and temporary work locations.

Verizon also used these and other communications services to help thousands of displaced businesses and consumers restore communications in the days following the attacks. Seminar attendees will learn how these products and services can be assembled to help protect their own critical communications.

Today's seminar is one of a series Verizon is offering this year throughout the country on a variety of topics relevant to large businesses and government agencies. Other seminar subjects include data networking, managed network services, security and convergence solutions.
