Hundreds of senior citizens will gather Thursday (Oct. 13) at the Waxter Center in Baltimore for free health screenings, information on discounted phone services, and tips on being safe on the Internet and guarding against identity theft and other consumer fraud.

Participants also will attend free workshops on "POWER Over Diabetes," "Reading Labels for Healthy Living" and "Chair Exercises for Your Heart," along with a workshop where experts will provide one-on-one training and personal assistance to help seniors navigate the features on their wireless devices.

"With this free Community Outreach, Resources and Education Fair, Verizon is showing its continued commitment to the citizens of Baltimore and helping to improve the quality of life for the city's elderly population," said Tabb Bishop, Verizon's vice president of government affairs.  "We are proud to partner with the state's top health care leaders and local government officials to educate our seniors and bring them much-needed healthcare services."

During these tough economic times, Verizon and the Maryland Office of People's Counsel also are raising awareness of federal and state Lifeline and Link-Up discounted phone programs to ensure that limited-income Marylanders get access to necessary telephone service.  These programs provide significant assistance to eligible customers in setting up and paying for telephone service, and help them to stay connected.

On hand to provide information and answer questions from senior citizens will be representatives from the Alzheimer's Association, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), American Diabetes Association, Baltimore City Council, Baltimore City State Attorney's Office, Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development (BUILD), Baltimore City Health Department, Hospice Association of Maryland, Maryland Office of People's Counsel, Mental Health Association of Maryland, Union Memorial Hospital, United Seniors of Maryland and Visiting Nurses Association of Maryland.  There also will be free giveaways throughout the day and special gifts for the first 100 senior citizens to arrive.
