NEW YORK - Tom Tauke has been named executive vice president - public affairs & communications of Verizon Communications. In this role, Tauke will oversee all internal and external communications, reputation management, philanthropy and issues management for Verizon, and will serve as a member of the company's Corporate Leadership Council.

In addition, he will retain his responsibilities for Verizon's Public Policy & External Affairs organization. In this role, Tauke is responsible for the development of Verizon's positions on public policy issues and oversees the company's policy advocacy at the local, state, federal and international levels.

"Tom has a proven record of excellence and results, along with deep knowledge of the telecom industry," said Verizon Chairman and CEO Ivan Seidenberg. "His background as an elected official and experience over the years with the media, with third parties and with advocacy at all levels make him an ideal choice for this senior role.

"Our goal is to create a unified focus on advocacy, reputation management and corporate positioning so Verizon can speak with one voice on issues that affect our industry, our company and our reputation."

Tauke, 53, joined the company in 1991 as vice president of government relations. He was a member of Congress, representing Iowa's second congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979 to 1991. He is a past chairman of the United States Telecom Association (USTA), where he is a member of the board of directors, the executive committee and the governance committee. He is chairman of Home Technology Systems Inc. in Dubuque, Iowa; serves on the Board of Directors of the Business Industry Political Action Committee; is vice chair of the Board of Regents and the Executive Committee of Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa; and is a member of the Board of Directors of Jobs for America's Graduates.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loras College in 1972 and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1974. He and his wife, Beverly, and their two children, Joseph and Elizabeth, reside in Alexandria, Va.
