TV Choice and Competition Near for Residents of Geddes and Solvay, N.Y.

Residents of the Town of Geddes and the Village of Solvay in Onondaga County in central New York are a major step closer to having a real choice for their cable television service, thanks to newly approved agreements authorizing Verizon to offer its FiOS TV service, delivered over the most advanced fiber-optic network straight to customers' homes.

The governing boards of both Geddes and Solvay approved their franchise agreements Tuesday night (Nov. 10).

In addition, at the end of last month Verizon made its FiOS TV product available to nearly 15,000 more households in parts of Sennett, Fayetteville, Camillus, DeWitt and Salina.  On Oct. 5, the company launched FiOS TV service in parts of eight communities in the central New York region, providing TV choice and competition for some 50,000 homes.

The addition of the Geddes and Solvay cable television franchises brings to 168 the total number of New York municipalities that have authorized Verizon to provide FiOS TV service.  Fifteen of these municipalities, including Geddes and Solvay, are located in central New York.  The others are: the Town of Camillus, Cicero, Clay, DeWitt, East Syracuse, Fayetteville, Fleming, North Syracuse, Owasco, Salina, Sennett, the Town of Skaneateles and the Village of Skaneateles.

"We're pleased that this agreement will enable Verizon to begin offering a competitive choice to our residents," said E. Robert Czaplicki, Geddes town supervisor.  "We welcome Verizon, and look forward to working with them."

Kathleen A. Marinelli, mayor of Solvay, said: "Competition is always a healthy element in any marketplace.  Having another TV provider for our residents and businesses could only lead to more choices, better customer service and more value for their spending dollar."

As with all local franchise approvals in New York, the agreements between Verizon and Geddes and Solvay subject to review by the New York State Public Service Commission.

"We've had great success with our FiOS TV product in just the short time it's been in the central New York market," said Andrés Irlando, Verizon president for the New York region.  "Consumers realize that an all-fiber-optic connection to their home opens up a new world of entertainment and programming choices, picture quality, social networking features, and download and upload speeds.  FiOS TV and FiOS Internet beat anything else on the market today -- hands down.

"A total fiber network triggers key differentiators and technology innovations like FiOS' multi-room DVR and on-screen Twitter and Facebook applications.  These are features that traditional cable just can't provide.  And these franchise agreements clearly demonstrate the customer demand for choice in broadband, television and entertainment services," he said.

A staple in the New York business community with more than 32,000 employees in the state, Verizon is continuing to invest in the state's infrastructure by building, maintaining and enhancing its wireline and wireless networks across New York, including its state-of-the-art fiber-optic network, providing consumers and businesses with reliable FiOS services for their Internet, entertainment and voice services.
