Verizon Awards $25,000 in Scholarships to Students at Instituto Politécnico Nacional

MEXICO CITY - To help increase the number of technical professionals in Mexico, Verizon has awarded $2,500 scholarships to 10 first-year students at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, one of Mexico's leading engineering schools.

The $25,000 in scholarships, provided by Verizon International Foundation, will be renewable each year of the school's five-year undergraduate programs in engineering, physics-mathematics and social and administrative science. Verizon awarded similar scholarships last year to 10 students at the school and renewed them this year.

Executives from Verizon and Iusacell, a Verizon affiliate, presented a check for the first and second-year scholarships to Miguel Angel Correa Jasso, director general of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, at a ceremony today at the Four Seasons Hotel.

"Verizon's scholarship program not only strengthens the institute's mission to develop a pool of highly qualified professionals, but it also provides the students with an opportunity they would not have otherwise had to attend an institution of higher education," said Correa.

"By helping these exceptional students reach their full academic potential, Verizon and Iusacell are honoring their commitment to foster education in Mexico."

Fares F. Salloum, president - International, the Americas for Verizon, said, "These scholarships are part of Verizon's long-standing commitment to support education programs that give people the technological and literacy skills they need to qualify for jobs in the electronic and digital marketplace of the 21st century."

Salloum also said that Verizon is "looking at new ways to develop and implement adult literacy and community empowerment projects in communities throughout Mexico" and that the company plans to make an announcement soon about these projects.

The scholarships will pay for each student's living expenses, books, transportation and health insurance. The Instituto Politécnico Nacional is tuition-free.

This year's scholarship recipients are Wilibaldo Aguayo Murssia, Ruth Safira Bernal Guzman, Francisco Ruben Camacho Martinez, Israel Garduño Segovia, Veronica Jaramillo Cruz, Fredy Diego Liconas Islas, Midgaled Lopez Juarez, Carlos Alberto Mendoza Bautista, Lidia Prudente Tixteco and Itzy Rivas Huerta.

In addition, four second-year students were named to receive scholarships, replacing four of last year's scholarship recipients who subsequently left the school. These winners are Margarita Elsa Gayosso Rios, Maribel Guadalupe Hernandez Valencia, Pascasio Pablo Pedro and Evelyn Pineda Tlapale.

"The grant is an investment in Mexico's future," said Carlos Espinal, president and CEO of Iusacell. "It will provide these students an opportunity to contribute to the telecommunications and economic growth of Mexico. Iusacell is committed to fostering higher education programs that help develop technical professionals capable of competing worldwide."

To qualify for a scholarship, applicants must have a grade point average of 9.0 for the engineering and physics-mathematics program and 9.5 for the social and administrative science program. They also must demonstrate financial need, be enrolled in the institute's five-year degree program and have been educated and maintain residency in Mexico.

When fully funded, the Verizon scholarship program will provide 50 scholarships totaling $625,000. Verizon has similar scholarship programs in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Europe and Asia.
