PETERSBURG, Va. - Verizon Business is upgrading networks for Petersburg city public schools, providing increased capacity and reliability, and access to high-speed network services.
Under a contract valued at about $350,000 over three years, Verizon Business is upgrading the school district's infrastructure from a copper-based asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network to a fiber-optic-based Ethernet network.
Work on installing the new network has begun and should be completed later this school year.
The improvements are crucial to the school district's goal of becoming a leader in the use of technology. The new high-capacity Ethernet network provides the district schools with higher speeds and more reliability.
"I am excited because this new fiber-optic network will greatly increase our bandwidth, giving us the opportunity to triple our current network capacity," said Gloria Greene, chief technology officer for the Petersburg city public schools. "Students and educators can expect a much higher level of service, which reflects our intention to become a world-class school division. By next year, we will be one of the leading school districts in technology."
As part of that effort this year, the Petersburg city public schools adopted a new technology plan; upgraded their Web page; and contracted for Sharepoint, Grade Pro and an exchange server, which will allow teachers to post class materials and students' grades for parents to evaluate.
Alex Coleman, senior vice president for Verizon Business' government and education organization, said: "The students and teachers of Petersburg will have access to state-of-the-art fiber-optic technology to take advantage of applications like video conferencing and distance-learning tools. This upgrade positions the district for growth for years to come."
