Verizon Deploys Advanced Switching Technology, Fiber Optics to Adams

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. - Verizon Communications, the national communications company formed by the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE, is investing more than $2 million to modernize its local telephone network in the Adams-Friendship area of Adams County.

The company recently installed new electronic call-routing equipment and Verizon's building has been remodeled to accommodate the new switching equipment. Verizon also has installed additional fiber-optic cable throughout the area, providing additional reliability in the company's telecommunications network.

Work on the project has been underway for over a year and is scheduled to be completed in December.

Fiber-optic systems use hair-thin glass fibers and digital technology to deliver high quality telephone service along with high-capacity/high-speed voice and data transmission services. Fiber-optic cable is unaffected by electrical storms, does not corrode and is not susceptible to water damage.

"This project is the latest evidence that Verizon is committed to delivering a state-of-the-art telecommunications network throughout Wisconsin," said Craig Lilley, general manager-customer operations for Verizon.

Lilley said Verizon has been a leader in deploying advanced technology throughout the state. The company's investment in its Wisconsin network will exceed $77 million this year, bringing the total investment since 1998 to over $254 million. Verizon invests more than $12 billion annually in its telecommunications network, which is one of the most advanced in the world and features an industry-leading 8.3 million miles of fiber-optic systems.

Verizon's call-routing switches in the state are 100 percent digital, and the company's aggressive schedule for deploying fiber-optic cable has increased miles of fiber-optic facilities in Wisconsin by 40 percent since 1995 -- from 2,309 miles to over 3,242 miles in 2000.

The Adams upgrade will not affect the price of local service and no dialing changes will be necessary. Customers may notice a slightly different pitch in their dial tone and busy signal.
