Verizon Deploys Advanced Switching Technology to Theresa, Wis.

THERESA, Wis. - Verizon Communications is investing nearly $300,000 to modernize its local telephone network in Theresa, improvements that will make Caller ID available soon to local customers.

The company recently installed new electronic central office call-routing equipment. Work on the project has been underway for over a year and is scheduled for completion May 23.

Similar projects are currently underway in Campbellsport and Eden and will be completed later this year.

"This project is the latest evidence that Verizon is committed to delivering a state-of-the-art telecommunications network throughout Wisconsin," said Andy Whitt, manager-network operations for Verizon.

Theresa customers will see an immediate benefit from this investment. On May 23, a new advanced service, Caller ID, will be available to Verizon customers. Caller ID permits a customer to see who is calling before the phone is answered, using a display unit that is built-in or attached to the phone. Caller ID lets you know when a friend or family member is calling and can deter harassing calls. It also keeps a record of calls received. Cost of the service is $7 a month. For more information, customers should call Verizon customer service at 1-800-483-4000 for residential customers or 1-800-483-5000 for businesses.

Callers with unlisted phone numbers and others who wish to protect their privacy can prevent their numbers from showing on a Caller ID unit. This can be done on a per-call basis by dialing *67 (or 1167 on a rotary phone) before placing the call. This service is called Selective Blocking - Per Call and is automatically on the phone line at no charge.

Whitt said Verizon has been a leader in deploying advanced technology throughout the state. Verizon's investment in its Wisconsin network exceeded $95 million last year, bringing the total investment since 1996 to over $411 million.
Verizon, which serves more than 400,000 customers in Wisconsin, pumped $1.8 million a week into its Wisconsin infrastructure last year.

The Theresa upgrade will not affect the price of local service. Customers may notice a slightly different pitch in their dial tone and busy signal.
