Verizon Deploys Fiber Optics, Electronics, Bringing Additional Voice and Data Capacity to Keene Area

KEENE, N.H. -- Verizon Communications is investing nearly $1 million to expand and upgrade its telecommunications network in southwestern New

Hampshire.

The investment includes upgrades to the main call-routing center in Keene combined with the installation of more than 700 miles of fiber-optic cable in the Keene,

Peterboro, Jaffrey, Sharon and Greenville areas.

The projects, completed this year, will provide additional capacity, reliability and survivability in the Verizon network. Fiber-optic systems use hair-thin glass

strands and digital technology to deliver high quality telephone services along with high-capacity/high-speed voice and data services.

"This substantial commitment to expand and strengthen the network that serves our business and residential customers in and around Keene demonstrates

that Verizon recognizes the robust growth that is taking place in this area of the state," said J. Michael Hickey, president of Verizon New Hampshire.

"We are very aware that the greater Keene area is participating in the unprecedented demand for telecommunications services that prevails throughout

most of New Hampshire. These projects are adding needed capacity and reliability to our network."

Nationwide, Verizon invests more than $12 billion annually in its telecommunications network, which is one of the most advanced in the world and features an

industry-leading 8.3 million miles of fiber-optic systems.

In New Hampshire, Hickey said this commitment to advanced technology includes:

  • More than $600 million in network investment since 1995 including $130 million this year.
  • 145,000 miles of fiber-optic cable, including more than 12,000 miles added this year.
  • The latest digital technology systems in all 126 call routing centers throughout the state.
  • Working with diverse community groups to help develop applications that use advanced telecommunications networks, such as video-based distance

    learning.

"We are proud of our critical role in assuring that New Hampshire continues to have one of the nation's most advanced telecommunications

networks," said Hickey. "This infrastructure will help our state, its businesses, schools and consumers to succeed in the new millennium."
