Verizon Employee Honored as Asian American Role Model

NEW YORK -- June Jee, Verizon director-Community Affairs, has earned the National Association of Asian American Professionals' Leadership Award. Jee will accept the honor at the organization's annual scholarship and leadership awards dinner May 18, in New York City.

This is the first year the New York chapter has presented the leadership award, which is given to Asian American professionals who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to their companies, coworkers and the community.

"June is an excellent role model, demonstrating leadership and dedication in all aspects of her professional and volunteer activities," said Julie Huang, National Association of Asian American Professionals, New York chapter president. "We salute June for her contributions and commend Verizon for its support of Asian American employees and communities."

A Verizon employee since 1980, Jee serves as liaison between the company and the New York City community, representing Verizon on several civic and non-profit boards. She also builds and maintains strategic relationships with local and national organizations in and around New York. Jee is a member of the boards of directors of the Museum of Chinese in the Americas, Second Generation Productions, United East Athletic Association, Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies in Washington, D.C. Jee is also president of Verizon's Asian Focus Group, one of three employee support organizations that address the professional needs of Verizon's Asian American work force.

"It's wonderful to be recognized as a role model by the National Association of Asian American Professionals," Jee said. "As a young person growing up in the mid 1960s on New York's Lower East Side, I didn't have many Asian Americans in visible positions to look up to. But that's changing. Now there are a lot of positive, energetic people committed to making a difference, and it's an honor to be recognized as one. But I know that this recognition wouldn't be possible without the support of my coworkers and Verizon."

Jee has received several honors including the National Organization of Chinese Americans Corporate Achievement Award, Andrea Del Conte - Danza Hispana Outstanding Community Achievement Award, the Chinese American Planning Council Community Service Award, Chinatown YMCA Service & Leadership Award, Bridge to Brotherhood Community Leadership Award and New York Governor George Pataki's Award of Excellence.

Jee received a Bachelor of Arts degree from City University of New York. She also holds a certificate in Corporate Community Relations from Boston College.
