PITTSBURGH - Verizon Thursday (Feb. 8) announced expansion plans for its state-of-the-art FTTP (fiber-to-the-premises) network across parts of southwestern Pennsylvania.
The company this year plans to deploy its FTTP network to customers in all or parts of 23 additional communities: Aspinwall, Baldwin Borough, Brentwood, Chalfont, East McKeesport, East Pittsburgh, Etna, Fox Chapel, Harmar, Monroeville, North Huntington, North Versailles, O'Hara, Penn Township, Pitcairn, Sharpsburg, Trafford, Turtle Creek, Wall, Whitehall, Wilkins and Wilmerding. Verizon will also deploy the network in additional neighborhoods within the city of Pittsburgh, including Carrick and Overbrook.
To date, Verizon has deployed its all-fiber-optic network to all or parts of approximately 70 southwestern Pennsylvania communities, offering the fastest data speeds available to homeowners and small businesses. In November, the company announced plans to build a regional video hub office in the Pittsburgh area to deliver video over its all-fiber-optic network and could begin offering FiOS TV in some southwestern Pennsylvania communities late this year.
"This all-fiber-optic network will help drive innovation and will transform the way consumers and businesses in southwestern Pennsylvania communicate, view and share on-line content and watch television" said William B. Petersen, president of Verizon Pennsylvania.
The network uses hair-thin strands of fiber and optical electronics to directly link homes and businesses to Verizon's network and replaces the traditional copper-wire connections. Verizon is the only major U.S. telecom company building an advanced, all-digital fiber-optic network, on a mass scale, all the way to customers' homes. Only Verizon's FTTP network has earned the certification of the independent Fiber to the Home Council.
By the end of 2007, Verizon expects pass about 275,000 homes and small businesses in southwestern Pennsylvania with its all-fiber-optic network.
Across the country, Verizon has passed more than 6 million homes and businesses, installing more than 366 million feet of fiber in parts of 16 states, and expects to pass an additional 3 million homes by the end of this year.
FiOS Internet service is offered in more than 1,600 communities in the 16 states where the company's new network is deployed: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia and Washington. The company currently offers FiOS TV service in parts of southeastern Pennsylvania and in parts of nine other states: California, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Texas and Virginia.
The FTTP initiative represents a natural extension of the more than 10 million miles of fiber-optic cable Verizon already has in place and extends the high capacity, speed and quality of fiber directly to the customer's doorstep. With FTTP technology, Verizon can easily add more capacity, higher speeds or video services in the future.
Verizon's digital subscriber line (DSL) service will remain the company's most widely available form of high-speed Internet access for the foreseeable future while the company ramps up FTTP deployment. The company offers DSL on a widespread basis throughout Pennsylvania over existing copper lines at speeds of up to 3 Mbps.*
