Verizon Foundation Donates $10,000 to Oxnard/Pt. Hueneme Boys and Girls Club for Computers and Software

OXNARD, Calif. - The Oxnard/Pt. Hueneme Boys and Girls clubhouse has a facelift - a new paint job and beautiful landscaping. And soon, it will have new computers. It's all thanks to a $10,000 technology grant from Verizon Foundation and lots of hard work by 75 Verizon employees who gave the club a new look.

To show their appreciation, about 25 youth from the Boys and Girls Club will present a giant, hand-painted "thank you" banner to Verizon employees when the foundation's grant is officially presented. The ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 14 at Verizon's Customer Care Center at 1800 Solar Drive in Oxnard.
The banner is in recognition of the Verizon employees who volunteered earlier this year to clean, repaint and landscape the outside of the Boys and Girls Club building at 125 E. Seventh Street in Oxnard. Verizon donated the paint, equipment and landscape materials for the effort.

The $10,000 grant will allow the club to purchase new computers, repair several printers and buy additional literacy, science and math software. Verizon employee volunteers will return to assist in setting up and repairing the computer equipment and installing the software.

"The Boys and Girls Club is thrilled to receive this significant donation, which will greatly enhance the capacity of our computer lab and the quality of our after-school instruction and tutoring," said Dean Moore, executive director of the Oxnard Boys and Girls Club. "Coupled with the major painting and cleanup volunteer efforts recently completed by the company's local employees, we have enjoyed a major upgrading of our facility -- thanks to Verizon."

Verizon and its predecessor GTE have a history of involvement with the club that spans more than 25 years. Over the years, Verizon has provided a number of grants for computer equipment and software and employees have consistently volunteered their time and technical expertise.

"Verizon remains committed to these young people," said Tim McCallion, Verizon Pacific region president. "By providing them with technology, we can help them prepare for success in the workplace and in the community. We hope our contribution and the efforts of our local employees will help to make a positive difference in their lives."

Verizon Foundation supports a variety of programs that focus on improving basic and computer literacy, bridging the digital divide, enriching communities through technology and creating a skilled work force. The foundation promotes partnerships in technology with organizations serving the needs of diverse communities, people with disabilities, and the economically and socially disadvantaged. The foundation also supports Verizon Volunteers, an incentive program that encourages Verizon employees to volunteer in their communities and provides matching gifts to nonprofit organizations.
