Verizon Foundation Offers $100,000 in Grants to West Virginia Nonprofit Groups

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Nonprofit organizations in West Virginia are invited to compete for $100,000 in grants offered by the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications.

Verizon is seeking grant proposals for technology projects that improve constituent service, outreach and programming by nonprofit organizations in West Virginia.

"Technology has dramatically changed the way we live, learn and work," said H. Stan Cavendish, president of Verizon West Virginia. "Verizon is committed to supporting organizations in their efforts to use technology to provide vital services to West Virginians."

In 2003, Verizon awarded 14 grants totaling $106,000 across the state for software, programs, training, databases, Web sites, technology planning and computer learning, among other uses of technology.

Applicants must submit proposals through the Verizon Foundation's Web site, www.verizon.com/foundation, by Sept. 22. Applicants should click on the West Virginia RFP link and type invitation code 643SEM5CP6.

To qualify for funding, applicants must be public or private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations with a valid Internal Revenue Service tax ID.

Nonprofit organizations also may submit applications for "eTraining" grants for staff training in a variety of computer programs. In addition, organizations may apply for "eGrants," which provide $240 toward first-time Internet access for nonprofits.

In 2003, the Verizon Foundation awarded 21,000 grants totaling more than $70 million to charitable and nonprofit agencies that focus on improving basic and computer literacy, enriching communities through technology, and creating a skilled work force. The foundation uses its resources in the United States and abroad to develop partnerships in technology and connect them with organizations serving the needs of diverse communities, people with disabilities, victims of domestic violence and the economically and socially disadvantaged.

The foundation also supports Verizon Volunteers, an incentive program that last year encouraged Verizon employees to volunteer 595,000 hours in their communities and provided $34.6 million in combined contributions to charitable and nonprofit organizations.
