Verizon Introduces Business Internet Security Services for Small Businesses with Big Security Concerns

NEW YORK - Small and mid-sized businesses that have computer networks connected to the Internet can now get round-the-clock protection from Verizon against hackers and other network attacks.

Verizon Business Internet Security Services, a new group of products, provide security solutions that are specifically designed to meet the needs and concerns of these businesses, which typically don't have extensive information technology resources. Verizon installs the products, and the security operations center continuously monitors the business customer's network - seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Customer support and automatic updates on the latest security threats are also provided.

"The nature of small business is changing. As more and more consumers and businesses rely on the Internet for commerce and research, it is imperative that businesses protect themselves from insidious attacks," said Eric Cevis, vice president for wholesale and business markets. "With Business Internet Security Services, Verizon can now offer small and mid-sized businesses peace of mind with a complete, secure and affordable Internet access solution from one provider."

The first two sets of Internet security products Verizon is offering are Verizon Premises Firewall and Virtual Private Network Services.

Verizon Premises Firewall Services are designed to help companies protect their data by warding off hackers and other attempts to gain access to company resources. Advanced technology and special hardware installed in the companies' computer systems help to detect and reject attacks and let businesses control access to their networks. For businesses with multiple sites, Premises Firewall also provides secure site-to-site connections.

Monthly prices start at $130 per month with a $206 set-up fee for a two-year commitment for a system that covers one to five devices. The system is designed to accommodate the growth of the business. One-year contracts are available, and installation charges apply based on the number of devices.

Virtual Private Network is designed for businesses that have employees who need to access the company network from remote locations. It includes the same hardware and security features as Verizon Premises Firewall. The products use sophisticated encryption technology to create secure connections. Data is routed over Verizon's Virtual Private Network, which creates a secure "tunnel" through the Internet.

"This gives employees access to company servers and e-mail, allowing them to work just as efficiently off-site as if they were in the main office," Cevis said.

Verizon VPN prices start at $172 per month for a two-year contract. One-year contracts are available, and installation charges apply based on the number of devices.

In addition to immediately alerting business customers about attacks on their networks, both services provide Web-based monthly summary reports that identify the time and origin of the attacks. This information can assist businesses in evaluating and changing security policies before their systems are breached.

Verizon managed security services are the first phase in the company's plan to develop a comprehensive portfolio of data security services for small and mid-sized business customers. The company plans to add desktop software-based firewall and anti-virus solutions later this month.
