GRANADA HILLS, Calif. - Five-time Grammy winner Al Jarreau will hit all the high notes at Granada Hills Charter High School today to honor ninth grader Marc Snetiker, grand prize winner in the Verizon/Los Angeles Times in Education Jazzed About Literacy essay competition.

"Basically, reading is like a light bulb in my head," Snetiker wrote in his essay, deemed the best out of more than 1,000 entries in the contest. "When I read, it lights up, and my brain comes to life."

Jarreau's be-bopping, jazz-talking personality will light up the school stage for a presentation to Snetiker and other winners at Granada Hills High School. The musician, who promotes the cause of a more literate America in his role as Verizon literacy champion, will address more than 400 students, teachers and community members at noon in the school auditorium.

The Jazzed About Reading essay contest was open to more than 112,000 pupils in grades 6-12 throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino counties who participated in the Times in Education Literacy Program. Entries were judged by a panel of educational experts assembled by the Times in Education program.
