Verizon SuperPages.com Sponsors Free Internet Learning Day at O'ahu WorkLinks

O'AHU, Hawaii -To reach across the digital divide to the estimated 35 percent of adults who do not have Internet access, Verizon Information Services -- publishers of SuperPages.com and the O'ahu SuperPages directory -- is sponsoring a free Internet Learning Day at O'ahu WorkLinks, on Saturday, Nov. 3.

The Internet Learning Day consists of eight one-hour sessions, the first starting at 9 a.m. and the last at 4 p.m. To ensure all participants have access to a computer, reservations must be made by calling 1-877-707-7685.

The Internet Learning Day program comes at a critical time, as more than 14,000 people have filed claims for unemployment insurance in Hawaii since the tragic events of Sept. 11. With an increasing number of people searching for new employment and labor cutbacks expected to influence the October 2001 unemployment rating, the Internet Learning Day offers this much needed training.

O'ahu WorkLinks, a partnership of agencies, organizations, government and private businesses provides an avenue for employers and potential employees to find each other through seven new "One Stop" centers - at no cost to the employer or individual job seeker.

ALU LIKE, Inc., America's Workforce Network, the City and County of Honolulu - WorkHawaii, the O'ahu Workforce Investment Board, the Honolulu Community Action and The State of Hawaii Workforce Development Division support Saturday's Internet Learning Day by promoting attendance to their members.

"This is a great opportunity to get 'connected.' The Internet is a great resource for job searching. Verizon's partnership with O'ahu WorkLinks provides a free program to learn valuable skills when searching for employment," said Lorna Lai, center manager of O'ahu WorkLinks, Dillingham.

Participants will learn how the Internet works, its history and frequently used vocabulary. In addition to visiting a number of community and job-related Web sites, participants will also receive information on local places they can freely access the Internet. Each participant will receive a free copy of the Verizon Internet Learning Disc (ILDisc). The ILDisc is an educational CD-ROM developed by Verizon that teaches novice Internet users how to navigate the Web.

Supported by local non-profit organizations across the country, the Verizon program has tutored more than 5,500 Internet novices navigate the World Wide Web with free one-hour, instructor-led training sessions. The Internet Learning Day is a complement to Verizon Information Services' electronic offerings including Verizon's SuperPages.com, the Internet's preeminent online directory and shopping resource.
