NEWARK, N.J. - Verizon reaffirmed its commitment to improving literacy and technology education in New Jersey last year through grants for a broad range of literacy, workforce development, community technology and human service programs.  The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, donated more than $1.6 million to 191 nonprofit groups in the state during 2007.

"In today's tight economy, nonprofit organizations need financial assistance now more than ever," said Dennis Bone, president of Verizon New Jersey.  "Verizon's grants underscore our long-standing goal of improving the communities we serve and our commitment to providing excellent service to our customers."

Recipients of major grants included:

  • Joe Torre Family Foundation for Margaret's Place - The goals of the Margaret's Place program are: the creation and recognition of the value of a "safe room" for students to discuss domestic violence and violence issues; greater awareness and knowledge of domestic violence; and a marked change in the attitudes and behaviors of students and the larger school community about the issue of violence.

  • New Jersey Performing Arts Center - The Verizon Foundation will assist the NJPAC in delivering the educational Verizon Passport to Culture series. In addition, NJPAC will highlight activities on Thinkfinity.org, Verizon's online educational resources program, in several teacher resource guides throughout the season.
  • Minding Our Business - An entrepreneur program designed to meet community needs by advancing the personal and vocational development of urban youth through entrepreneurship education and mentoring.

The Verizon Foundation supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its signature program, Thinkfinity.org, and fosters awareness and prevention of domestic violence.  In 2007, the foundation awarded more than $67.4 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the United States and abroad. The foundation also matched the charitable donations of Verizon employees and retirees, resulting in $25.1 million in combined contributions. Through Verizon Volunteers, one of the nation's largest employee volunteer programs, Verizon employees and retirees have volunteered more than 3 million hours of community service since Verizon's inception in 2000.
