Verizon Supports 35 Ohio Nonprofit Groups to Promote Literacy, Technology and Workforce Development

MARION, Ohio -- Verizon reaffirmed its commitment to improving literacy and technology education in Ohio last year through grants for a broad range of literacy, workforce development, community technology and human service programs. Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, donated $555,258 to 35 nonprofit groups in the state during 2002.

"In today's tight economy, nonprofit organizations need financial assistance now more than ever," said Todd Colquitt, president-Verizon Ohio. "Verizon's grants underscore our long-standing goal of improving the communities we serve and our commitment to providing excellent service to our customers."

Recipients of major grants included:

  • Marion City Schools, Marion-- $40,000 to expand the MarionReads literacy program.

  • Ohio Community Computing Network, Columbus -- $50,000 to manage and expand Community Technology Centers in Ohio.

  • Appalachian Center for Economic Networks, Inc. , Athens -- $25,000 to provide job training, computer and Internet skills as part of the Athens County Jump Start the Future program.

In addition, literacy grants went to Bucyrus Area Community Foundation/Crestline Child Care, Crestline; Cleveland Reads; Lakota Central Elementary School, Rising Sun; Marion Shelter Program, Inc., Marion; The Young Men's Christian Association, Marion; and the Western Ohio Educational Foundation, Celina.

In support of technology education, Verizon also awarded grants to Andrews House, Delaware; Delaware South Campus Vocational School, Delaware; Marion Area Counseling Center, Inc., Marion; Marion Shelter Program, Inc., Marion; River Valley Local School District, Marion; Scio Development Committee, Inc., Scio; The Johnny Appleseed Heritage Center, Mansfield; and the Tuscarawas County YMCA, New Philadelphia.

Verizon recognized the importance of the state's workforce development programs by awarding additional grants to the Grand Lake Mercer County Research, Inc., Celina; Marion County Red Cross, Marion; Marion Technical College Development Fund, Inc., Marion; Medina County Department of Workforce Development, Medina; Scioto County Vocational School, Lucasville; Shawnee Mental Health Center, Inc., Portsmouth; Shawnee State University Office of Development, Portsmouth; Southern State Community College, Wilmington; and the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges, Inc., Columbus.

In addition to Verizon Foundation grants, 122 agencies received nearly $126,000 through Verizon Volunteers, a program that encourages Verizon employees to volunteer in their communities and provides matching gifts to the nonprofit organizations that employees support.
