SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Verizon Information Services ? formed by a merger between GTE and Bell Atlantic - will bring the Internet to area residents Saturday, July 8, by sponsoring a free Internet Learning Day at the Syracuse CompUSA Training Center in the Carousel Center Mall.

The event complements the 2000-2001 Internet Guide, a 12-page tabbed insert in the Syracuse metropolitan area Yellow Pages, published by Bell Atlantic - which is now Verizon Information Services. The guide is a step-by-step primer designed for novice Internet users.

The Internet Learning Day initiative, supported by local community organizations, is offered to residents who may not have access to Internet training. The Syracuse event is the 17th in an ongoing series of Internet Learning Days.

"The Internet Guide and the Internet Learning Day series are targeted at the 35 percent of the adult population who do not have access to learning about the Internet," said Kathy Harless, president -Verizon Information Services. "We believe that offering such community-oriented initiatives is consistent with our efforts to provide local information and services such as the Internet that allow for global access."

Saturday's Internet Learning Day event-expected to attract some 150 participants-is co-sponsored by Onondaga County Public Libraries, Onondaga County Department of Aging and Youth, The Dunbar Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. These community-based organizations are participating in the event as well by promoting attendance to their membership. According to representatives of these community organizations, there is a lack of available Internet education for adults of all ages and socio-economic levels.

The advertiser-supported Internet Guide contains information on hardware and software requirements, a step-by-step approach for connecting to the World Wide Web, tips on choosing an Internet service provider, Frequently Asked Questions and a list of recommended local, regional and national Web sites. In addition to the Internet Guide, the Resource Guide, designed to provide information to consumers about health care, home improvement and pet care, is included as a helpful resource in the Yellow Pages.

Participants in the beginner sessions receive information on locations to access the Internet for free and ways to acquire a personal computer at a reduced cost. Attendees from the sessions can participate in a drawing for a personal computer.
