Verizon Wireless Announces Donation To America's River Project For Dubuque Riverfront

Presented at Grand Opening of Kennedy Mall Retail Store

May 31, 2001

DUBUQUE, IA

—

At a "wire-cutting" ceremony today, Verizon Wireless celebrated the grand opening of its new store location at Kennedy Mall with Rich Garwood, President of the Great Plains Region, presenting a check for $1,500 to Sue Czeshinski of the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce, in support of the America's River Project. The grant will help fund the public campaign to revitalize Dubuque's riverfront and build the River Discovery Center and Riverwalk public areas.

"We are pleased to invest in the community where we do business by supporting the America's River Project," said Garwood. " Like the supporters of this effort, we believe in the future of the Dubuque area. Verizon Wireless' recently introduced digital service (part of our $8 million area network improvement plan) in Eastern Iowa and our new, more conveniently located Communications store in Kennedy Mall, are just two examples of our increasing commitment to the area."

Verizon Wireless' store grand opening will run through Sunday, June 3, with special customer incentives. The store features the latest digital phones and accessories as well as local, regional and national calling plans with no roaming charges and free long distance.

The 1,210 square-foot Verizon Wireless store is located at the Kennedy Mall near the main entrance across from Trade Secrets. The store is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; and Sunday, noon – 6 p.m. The store's phone number is (319) 588-0800 and the store manager is Julie Bushaw. Verizon Wireless was previously located at the Inn Plaza, across from the Kennedy Mall.

America's River is a partnership of the City of Dubuque, the Dubuque County Historical Society and Chamber of Commerce to revitalize Dubuque's riverfront. The $188 million project is designed to attract visitors interested in learning about the Mississippi River and will also feature an aquarium, education and conference center, hotel and indoor water park.
