Verizon Wireless today announced the creation of its new Wireless Data & Internet Services Division, and named Gary Schulman as the new organization's president. The appointment is effective immediately.

Schulman previously served as President, Mid-Atlantic Area, for Verizon Wireless. "Throughout his history with Verizon Wireless, Bell Atlantic Mobile and his tenure in the wireless industry, Gary has demonstrated the vision and know-how to grow new businesses quickly," said Denny Strigl, president and CEO of Verizon Wireless.

Verizon Wireless' new Wireless Data & Internet Services Division will direct product development, deployment and marketing, as well as coordinate network infrastructure for the company's entire data operations, including its flagship Mobile Web product.

The Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) reported last week that from June 1999 through June 2000, revenue growth in the wireless data sector increased by 306%1. Analysts at Donaldson Lufkin Jenrette Securities Corp. estimate that at year-end 2000, 5.3 million Americans will subscribe to wireless data services, and the market will explode to more than 128 million by year-end 20052, and to 181 million by 2009.

Strigl said creating the new Wireless Data & Internet Services Division underscores the Verizon Wireless commitment to mobile computing. "Although consumers are just now beginning to test the waters with Mobile Web and other new wireless data offerings, we will be ready with the products, services and accessibility that Americans will demand," he said. "When it comes to wireless data and Internet services, Verizon Wireless will maintain the same commitment to exceptional quality, service and value that has made us the market leader in wireless telephony."

Schulman will lead the organization from offices in Maryland and New Jersey.

Gary Schulman
As president of the Verizon Wireless Mid-Atlantic Area, Schulman oversaw operations in Philadelphia and Washington/Baltimore, both of which were ranked highest in overall customer satisfaction among wireless users, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2000 U.S. Wireless Customer Satisfaction Studysm released in late September.

Schulman previously served as president of Bell Atlantic Mobile's Washington/Baltimore region, and was regional vice president of the Bell Atlantic Mobile Northeast region. He also held positions at Motorola, Inc.

Schulman has been involved in the cellular industry since its inception in 1984. He earned a degree in communications from the State University of New York, New Paltz.
