Verizon Wireless Awards $40,000 In Scholarships To Latino High School Seniors In Southland

Eight Local Students Receive College Scholarship Grants
Through Verizon Wireless Latino Scholarship Program

Eight local high school seniors have each received a $5,000 Verizon Wireless Latino Scholarship in recognition of their community commitment and exceptional scholastic achievement. In addition to receiving the funds for college, the scholarship winners were congratulated by members of the Chivas soccer team last Sunday, July 8, during the Chivas tour game at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Chivas is one of Mexico's leading soccor teams, and is currently touring the United States.

The winning students, their home towns and their high schools, are: Karla Alfaro of Los Angeles, Birmingham High School, Van Nuys; Maria Gutierrez of Bell Gardens, Bell Gardens High School, Bell Gardens; Henry Horton of Compton, California Academy of Math and Science, Carson; Zaher Lopez of Huntington Park, Huntington Park High School, Huntington Park; Brenda Perez of Los Angeles, Theodore Roosevelt High School, East Los Angeles; Alma Sarinana of Santa Ana, Santa Ana High School, Santa Ana; Roman Silva of Pico Rivera, El Rancho High School, Pico Rivera; and Julia Umana of Pacoima, San Fernando High School.

We awarded $100,000 in scholarships to Latino students in California and Arizona this year, recognizing that education is a top priority for Latino families.
