Verizon Wireless Launches Digital Service In Yuma

Customers to Benefit from High Quality Service and Enhanced Features

January 10, 2001

Verizon Wireless today launched its digital network in Yuma, AZ. The availability of digital service offers consumers and business customers in Yuma, and those traveling to the city, a long list of benefits, including enhanced features like Caller ID, wireless Internet access, superior digital voice reception, longer battery life, enhanced privacy and extra protection against cloning fraud.

With digital service, consumers in Yuma can now sign up for Mobile Web, a wireless Internet service that provides easy access to E-mail, stocks, news, weather, scores, calendar, address, horoscope, the lottery and other Internet services. Subscribers can even comparison shop and play an interactive game right on the screen of a Verizon Wireless phone.

"We are excited about delivering all of the benefits of digital service to area residents, particularly, about being able to offer wireless Internet access, which opens up a whole new world of possibilities," said Jerry Gallegos, regional president, Verizon Wireless. "Through Barpoint, our Mobile Web customers can comparison shop, finding the best price on items such as CDs, books or music by simply entering a product's bar code. Through Unplugged Games our customers can access Unplugged Games' flagship interactive game, Word Trader, through a new Mobile Web games folder, which will soon expand to include other games."

The introduction of digital service in Yuma is part of a $4 billion investment made last year to improve and extend the reach of Verizon Wireless' nationwide network. Previously, Verizon Wireless offered only analog service in the area. Now that both digital and analog service are available, customers with dual-mode (analog/digital) phones will be able to take advantage of digital service immediately. At the same time, analog customers will continue to enjoy their existing coverage, and have the option to upgrade to a digital phone to enjoy the features and benefits of digital service.

"Residents and visitors of Yuma will now be able to enjoy clearer calls with less background noise and longer battery life on their phones," added Gallegos.
