Verizon Wireless To Offer Brew-Enabled Service From Qualcomm

Service Will Allow Verizon Wireless Customers to Personalize Their Mobile Phones by Downloading a Wide Variety of Applications Over the Air

February 07, 2002 - BEDMINSTER, NJ and SAN DIEGO, CA- Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless service provider, and QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that the companies have signed an agreement for Verizon Wireless to commercially launch applications based on QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless™ (BREW™) platform.

Verizon Wireless will begin rolling out BREW applications in a portion of its coast-to-coast footprint as early as this spring. Verizon Wireless will be the first carrier in North America to launch BREW-enabled applications, providing customers with the ability to download a variety of entertainment and productivity applications over the air.

John Stratton, chief marketing officer at Verizon Wireless, said the launch of BREW will further extend the company's leadership in wireless data services. "With our launch of advanced, high-speed wireless service in late January as the backdrop, we are pleased to be working with QUALCOMM to bring BREW-enabled applications to our customers. Working now with developers as they design fun games and entertainment applications, as well as information and productivity tools, means consumers will experience some very cool applications on their BREW-enabled devices."

"QUALCOMM developed the BREW platform to open the untapped possibilities of the wireless economy and to enable a genuinely useful mobile experience," said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, group president, QUALCOMM Wireless & Internet Group. "The BREW platform puts the power to personalize with the consumer - to download applications over the air, virtually anytime and anywhere. It's like having a software store in your hand."

Details of the business agreement between Verizon Wireless and QUALCOMM were not disclosed.

About BREW

QUALCOMM's BREW platform is a thin application execution environment that provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The BREW platform is part of a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications development and application distribution. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW Software Development Kit™ (SDK) for developers, the BREW applications platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that is controlled and managed by carriers enabling them to easily get applications from developers and take them to market. BREW is a product of the QUALCOMM Internet Services (QIS) division and QUALCOMM Wireless & Internet (QWI) group of QUALCOMM.

BREW for Developers

BREW applications are written in C/C++. While the BREW platform supports programming in other languages, such as Java™ and XML, C/C++ is used as the primary language by significantly more developers worldwide than any other language, according to International Data Corp. For more information about BREW for developers or the BREW Developer Alliance Program, go to http://www.qualcomm.com/brew/developer.
