January 14, 2002
Verizon Wireless customers affected by the (219) area code split may now begin visiting Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and authorized agents to have their wireless phones re-programmed to accommodate the new (574) and (260) area codes assigned by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC).
"Verizon Wireless provides the re-programming service free to its customers," said Wayne
White, president of the Indiana/Kentucky/Michigan region. "Wireless phones are considered
indispensable tools by many of our customers, and we want to help them stay connected."
The new (574) area code will be used by communities such as South Bend, Elkhart, Mishawaka,
Plymouth and Monticello, while communities such as Angola, Fort Wayne, Huntington and Portland
have been assigned area code (260). The current (219) area code will continue to be used by cities such as Gary, LaPorte, Rensselaer and Remington.
Verizon Wireless customers will receive more detailed instructions on the free re-programming
in their wireless bills. Re-programming must be completed by June 14.
