PHILADELPHIA -- Verizon Communications has named William B. Petersen president of Verizon Pennsylvania. Petersen, previously general counsel for Verizon in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Washington, D.C., succeeds James V. O'Rourke.

"Bill Petersen brings extensive experience in public policy, national telecommunications and competitive marketplace issues," said Colleen A. McCloskey, Verizon senior vice president for public affairs, policy and communications. "We are very fortunate to have someone of Bill's character, expertise and public policy background chart the course for 21st century broadband and information-age technologies for Verizon's customers in Pennsylvania."

Prior to joining Verizon's legal department in 2000, Petersen was in private practice and before that served as an assistant United States attorney in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

"I am excited by the opportunity to lead Verizon Pennsylvania at a time when the world of communications continues to be transformed by customers' demands for speed, mobility and control," Petersen said.

O'Rourke recently was appointed senior vice president and general manager for Verizon sales and local marketing for consumer and general business, network operations and customer service in Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Petersen resides in Gladwyne, Pa., with his wife, Anna Marie, and their son, Matthew.
