June 22, 1999-ORANGEBURG, NY-
Backyard barbecues, baseball games and
bike rides-the signs of summer are everywhere. But as outdoor fun and
summer travel shift into high gear, it's important to make safety a top
Whether you're headed to the Jersey Shore, the Hamptons or your neighborhood
pool, a wireless phone can enhance your personal safety and provide a
vital connection for help in an emergency.
Bell Atlantic Mobile offers the following tips for using your wireless
phone wherever your travels take you this summer:
Always Carry Your Phone With You
In any medical emergency, minutes matter and a wireless phone could make
a life-saving difference in terms of how quickly help arrives. In addition
to calling for first aid, use your phone to report highway accidents,
or when you're lost or your car breaks down.
Know Your Wireless Phone Number
Emergency personnel may ask how they can reach you, especially if you're
traveling in an unfamiliar area and can't give them an exact location.
Press SEND Button After Dialing 9-1-1
Help is only a few buttons away, but you must press SEND for the call
to go through, even when dialing 9-1-1. Be sure to call 9-1-1 only for
true emergencies. More than 100,000 wireless calls are made to 9-1-1 each
Check Your Battery
If your wireless phone is reserved for emergency use, be sure to check
and charge the battery before taking off. You may even want to bring along
a spare battery or keep a lighter adapter in your car. If you're planning
an extended motor trip, digital phones offer the longest battery life.
When behind the wheel, safe driving is always your first responsibility.
Whenever possible, pull off the road before dialing. Learn to use the
phone's re-dial features and pre-program frequently dialed numbers, such
as the babysitter and home. And, never take notes or write down phone
numbers while driving.
Stay in Touch
When you're away, the folks at home want to hear
from you. A check-in call when you've arrived at your destination will
let loved ones know you're safe.
