July had me running around the Midwest for various events, most recently bringing me along the Gunflint Trail of Northern Minnesota to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Canoe trips, hiking and blueberry picking kept my weekend busy, but to capture the beautiful memories perfectly, I made sure to bring my olloclip 4-in-1 Photo Lens.

A passion for photography goes farther than just a hobby; some may even argue it is an addiction. And the best part is you no longer need to have a top-of-the-line camera to get striking, high-quality shots.

The olloclip lens smart accessory is compatible with the iPhone 5/5s, and all the prep you will need is the three seconds it takes to slide it onto the corner of your phone.

The olloclip provides a stunning array of angles: fisheye, wide-angle and macro options. Here are my how-to tips for capturing the perfect shot of all your summer adventures:

Lens 1 - Fisheye Lens

  • The shot: Captures approximately 180 degree field-of-view producing an unusually striking shot.
  • Best for:
    • Capturing buildings or structures that normally would be taller than the camera’s frame.
    • The ultimate “selfie” lens.
  • Tip: I have found this lens is best used when the human subject (or subject of comparable size) is arms-length away; smaller subjects can be closer, and larger focal points generally require more space between the subject and the lens.

Lens 2 - Wide-Angle Lens

  • The shot: Aids in capturing double the frame that normally would be offered from an iPhone’s camera lens.
  • Best for:
    • Capturing a multitude of subjects in one picture.
    • A landscape shot.
  • Tip: Use the panorama feature on the iPhone to maximize the area of the image you capture.

Lens 3 - 15x Macro Lens

  • The shot: This macro lens allows you to capture the texture of nearly any object big or small, and amplifies the tone, depth and shape more than a human eye ever could do alone.
  • Best for:
    • Capturing details on smaller subjects, such as the wings of a little bug, or trichomes (fine hairs) on the stem of a plant.
    • Used as a magnifying glass that captures extremely focused and detailed pictures (this can be fun with little ones to get out and explore in nature!).
  • Tip: To get the best picture, you need to get extremely close to the subject, but after that, the lens does the rest of the work for you (no need for tapping the screen to focus).

Lens 4 - 10x Macro Lens

  • The shot: If you want a closer shot of interesting smaller subjects, this lens is essential.
  • Best for: Subjects such as nature, food, or even a face.
  • Tip: The zoom allows you to get a close shot, but does not become a microscope like the 15x macro lens. For best results, hold the lens within 2-4 inches of the subject.
