The distinct fried dough and warm sugar smells of funnel cake waft through the warm summer air. Teeth get forgivably stuck on the sticky edge of a caramel apple, while feet traipse through freshly cut grass and gravel-lined walkways. They’re the unmistakable sensations of county fair season, which is in full swing. Aside from plush souvenirs and mustard-lathered hot dogs, there’s one aspect that a fairground simply isn’t complete without. People. Lots of people.
In Pennsylvania, fairgoers come out in big numbers, which boosts demand for wireless services, so folks can stay in touch with family and friends or post that selfie with a giant ream of cotton candy or the prize pig. Verizon Wireless has a solution: outfitting the fairgrounds with COWs—not the spotted, mooing, dairy farm sort—but Cells on Wheels, a temporary solution to amplify network coverage.
With enhanced voice, 3G and 4G LTE and XLTE coverage, fair-goers can quickly call, text and share their Warren County Fair experiences on Verizon Wireless’ network. “At large events like these, we look at how our customers’ usage patterns are changing and increasing and utilize this information to make sure we stay ahead of their demand,” said Mark Frazier, president of Verizon Wireless’s Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia Region.
We are providing COWs for the following western Pennsylvania fairs and agricultural events: Warren County Fair Pittsfield, PA | August 11-15 Great Dayton Fair Dayton, PA | August 16-22 Penn State AG Progress Days Pennsylvania Furnace, PA | August 18-20 Centre County Grange Encampment and Fair Centre, PA | August 21-29
The Warren County Fair alone estimates they’ll see 50,000 people, while 42,000 are estimated to attend AG Progress Days and 10,000 are estimated to attend the Grange Fair. Longtime Grange fairgoer Heidi Stover says the COW will be a welcome addition to this year’s fair. “The Centre County Grange Encampment and Fair is unique and draws thousands of people, many who stay for more than a week,” said Heidi Stover, area resident. “This puts a strain on the wireless networks in the area. I’m happy to see Verizon is helping its customers, both residents and fairgoers, stay connected by bringing in the COW.”
